Bardu kommune på 2700 km² har pr. 1. kvartal 2020 4023 innbyggere. Bardus moderne historie begynner på slutten av 1700-tallet, men innflytting fra Sør-Norge , særlig fra Østerdalen. Inntil denne tid hadde Bardu ingen fast bosetting.
Kommunen består av flere sammenhengende dalfører, med betydelig jord- og skogbruksarealer. Jordbruket har hatt en solid posisjon i Bardu gjennom generasjoner. I de senere år har det i noen grad veket plass for industri, handels- og servicenæringer, samt et betydelig offentlig engasjement. Forsvaret, som etablerte seg i Bardu i 1898, er i dag kommunens største arbeidsgiver.

The municipality of Bardu covers an area of 1.040 sq. miles and has 4023 inhabitants. Bardu`s modern history commenced towards the end of the 18th century with settlers moving in from south into an area which previously had no permanent inhabitants. The municipality consists of several valleys with large areas of arable and forested land, and for generations agriculture has been the main source of livelihood. Recent years, however, have seen an increase in trade and industry, services and many government-sponsored activities. The armed forces, which have been stationed in Bardu since 1898, are today the municipality`s largest employer.
